When life gives you lemons, make tens of millions of dollars by being one of the most popular pop singers in the world and writing an album about it. Actually, all of the supposed drama behind new album is looking pretty real right now, because Bey just pulled a pretty intense move that completely stripped the edge from her husband’s streaming music service. Her new album, which is said to be about recent trouble in her marriage to Jay Z involving fighting and infidelity, was promoted ahead of launch as a Tidal exclusive. Upon release, Lemonade was indeed a Tidal exclusive for about a day.
Beyonce is featured on the current issue of Dazed and Confused Magazine. She is totally working it. Rumors continue to circulate that as a result of Bey’s new CD, 4 leaking weeks before its scheduled release, she might just scrap the project and release something entirely different. I would not put it past her. I mean, hello? She did record more than 60 potential tracks. Check out some other hot photos from the issue.
Speaking of Beyonce, I received an email from a reader responding to my album review of 4. They wrote: “ Where oh where is the R&B on this album? It sounds like 80’s/’90’s POP music, only, not R&B. I’m still waiting for her to come back to true R&B, until she does, the music industry won’t let the other R&B artists shine.
She could help the industry, if she really wanted to, but right now, her music is more pop (white), like they accuse Rihanna of sounding, but at least RiRi does get in touch with her roots from time to time, i.e. Out of the 12 songs, only one is worth the listen, Rather Die Young.
(well Andre’ 3000 on Party), however, she’s up to her screaming antics, instead of singing, at least when Mary and other R&B artists hit their high notes, it doesn’t come off as a scream, but as emotion, they hit their notes, your ears don’t ring from it. This is her problem, she tries to put a lil soul in it, but her voice isn’t made that way. She just needs to sing the notes, it would probably sound beautiful, like Mariah back in her day. Mariah didn’t scream. I know most won’t understand the difference or what I’m getting at, but hitting extremely high notes is not screaming, but singing to try to add emotion, like bey tries, comes off as screaming.
She has no ability to voaclly pull off emotion other than when you can ‘hear’ her smile. (that’s a choir thing). Sorry, until she comes with the original Bey from the original DC days, I have a hard time finding her music worthwhile. I think when she let her childhood friends go, she let a part of her true soul (musically) go, as well.
(I pointed out musically, b/c I don’t want to come off as one of those illuminati spouting crazy sounding people)” Well-written Doll. You make some valid points. Other than her album track, “I Care”, where she does do a bit of screaming, which I feel is necessary for the anger in the song, I don’t particularly care for some of the wailing she tends to do on many songs either. I disagree with you though when you say this album is more pop than R & B.
Like you said it’s definitely throwback 80’s/90’s but I think most of these tracks would get more airplay on an urban R & B station that plays Alicia Keys and Jennifer Hudson, than hearing most of these tracks on a Top 40 Pop station playing Jennifer Lopez, Britney, or Gaga. There isn’t enough pop on this album because I find myself skipping through tracks longing for more to bop around to. It’s a smoother mellower album this time around, and I just don’t associate that with Pop.
In fact the only track you say is worth a listen, “Rather Die Young”, is one of her most R & B-sounding slow jams in a long time. As for your comparisons to Mariah and RiRi, I think those two women have been more consistent as artists, not trying radical things like Beyonce has and that makes them seem more solid and easier to market. It will be interesting to see how the public receives Beyonce’s new album, if it remains in the current form we have heard. It has been a dissappointing week for Beyonce and her record label Columbia Records. First early tuesday saw two of her tracks leaked (“Party” and “Countdown”) and then by the afternoon, surprisingly her entire album got leaked, almost 3 weeks prior to its official release date. It is not unusual for an album to leak before its release date, however it normally happens 3-5 days before its release, not 3 whole weeks. “My music was leaked and while this is not how I wanted to present my new songs, I appreciate the positive response from my fans,” Beyonce wrote on her official Facebook page.
“When I record music I always think about my fans singing every note and dancing to every beat. I make music to make people happy and I appreciate that everyone has been so anxious to hear my new songs.” Her record label, Columbia Records probably faces a huge loss of album sales since fans get 3 weeks to download the CD for free before it is offically released to the public for purchase. Considering their options, Columbia may move the release date to sooner or possibly try to get Beyonce to change some of the tracks. They are currently conducting an investigation to figure out who got an early copy of the album and then leaked it everywhere online. They are issuing Cease and Decist orders to blogs and websites who excitedly posted links since Tuesday to download the entire 4 album.
The leak situation wouldn’t be such a bad thing if the album was actually successful after all the drama. After sitting down and listening to the entire thing and then reading what others are already saying, the general concensus is not good. With this year’s most anticipated female pop releases already out (Britney, Lady Gaga, and Jennifer Lopez) it is very clear that each of these artists went in a very club-ready, Swedish-inspired electronic pop direction. Beyonce’s 4 goes in an entirely different direction from the others and is pretty much an R & B album with a lot of live instruments. Unlike her last studio album, 2008’s I amSasha Fierce, there isn’t a 2-disc set, with one whole CD of radio bangers and another to put all the ballads together. There are a lot of mid-tempos and ballads on this album and it’s more of a showcase of Bey’s vocal abilities, than hard hitting beats and radio friendly bangers.
I think die-hard Beyonce fans will like it, but people interested in her dance hits like “Single Ladies”, “Naughty Girl” or “Deja Vu” are not going to get those kind of tracks on this album. I heard she recorded some 60 tracks to potentially be included so I seriously hoping she includes some faster tracks on the deluxe edition, to balance the current ballad-heavy album. My favorite Beyonce album is B’Day, with her debut album, Dangerously In Love following closely second. Here’s what I think of the new album, 4: “1+1”: I was kinda shocked she chose this 1. To open the CD and 2.
To perform on American Idol. It’s a very slow, sensual track, where she does this Prince-like high pitched thing when she sings certain words. Like many songs on the CD, it mainly focuses on her strong vocals, as she sings about longing to get physical with the one she loves.
The music is pretty hot on the track, especially the guitar. “I Care”: I love this song.
It’s my 3rd favorite on the CD. It might be slower in tempo, but I love how strong and angry her voice is. It is well written, about caring and making time for someone special in your life and they really just don’t feel as strongly as you do anymore “I Miss You”: It’s slow and kinda boring. The lyrical arrangement is simple and her voice airy making this one almost like a lullaby. I’m sleepy alreadyyawn. “Best Thing I Never Had”: This is the album’s next single. It is very radio friendly, probably because this song is very similar to another one of Beyonce’s empowering breakup songs, “Irreplaceable”.
Written with Babyface, the song is basically about seeing someone for who they really are before the relationship gets too deep, allowing her to ‘dodge a bullet’ and move on. “Party”: This song already had me when I saw it featured Kanye West and Andre 3000 of Outkast. This song is so smooth and perfect for cruisin in your car on a summer day or night. Both rappers do a good job with their verses, as Bey sings about how they like to party.
It’s cool to see Andre and Bey reunited again after they collaborated on her single “Hip Hop Star” from Dangerously In Love. “Rather Die Young”: This is a smooth, retro 80’s- R & B influenced track, featuring live instruments. It sounds more like something Alicia Keys would record. I like Beyonce’s vocals. She sings about not wanting to live her life without her man, so she’d rather die young if he’s not around. “Start Over”: This song reminds me of the one of the non-stand out ballads from I amSasha Fierce.
It’s not bad. The words are relatable, refering to when a relationship isn’t really going anywhere new and it might be best to start over, to recreate some magic. “Love On Top”: The more I listen to this track, the more I scratch my head because it is very different for Beyonce.
It’s strictly retro 80’s R & B. The lyrics are simple and so is the beat. Her voice sounds great but it’s hard to imagine her releasing this song. “Countdown”: This is my 2nd favorite track on the CD. I think she should have released this one first. It’s upbeat and quite unique.
It has an island feel mixed with a big band sound with live instruments. She also samples Boyz II Men’s “Uh-Ahh” and the vocal arrangement is pretty cool. “End Of Time”: This is hands down my favorite track on 4. It is a feel-good song that is upbeat and features live instruments and chanting lyrics that almost reminds you of a marching band. The production, music, and vocals make this song sound epic.
I really think this song kinda saves this whole project and could be a guaranteed hit for Bey. Why didn’t she release this one first?
It would’ve been a great track to start the album with too. “I Was Here”: I love all songs written by legendary writer Diane Warren (Aerosmith, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston) and she doesn’t dissappoint with these powerful lyrics. Beyonce’s voice sounds great but I wish the music was more anthemic and grand, instead of so simplistic.
“Run The World (Girls)”: It’s so strange that she put her first single from the project as the last song, after all the slow ballads. This song is very unique with an MIA worldly kinda sound to it.
The lyrics are empowering to women everywhere. Since we don’t have a lot of dance songs to pick from on this album this one definitely grows on us. Overall, I appreciate that she was trying to create a different type of album. I just wished along with the new type of material she is trying, that she would include more of her usual blockbuster tracks to keep us devoted fans happy. I highly recommend “Countdown”, “I Care”, “End Of Time” and “Party”. I’m anxiously awaiting the bonus tracks, but until then I’m giving this one a C+.
